We might think that being alone and feeling lonely is the same thing, when they are, indeed, two different things. Being alone can mean choosing to be alone, doing the things we love, and finding joy in these things. However, when it comes to loneliness, it’s feeling disconnected from everyone around us. If you’ve ever felt a lack of social connection or even felt isolated, this might be a sign that you are in a state of loneliness.
In this episode of Sero Boost: The Happiness Science Insights Podcast, host Aditi Kutty is joined by Maggie Hamilton, a writer, speaker, and keen observer of social trends. Her books, published in over 12 countries worldwide, include What Men Don’t Talk About, about the lives of real men and boys; What’s Happening to Our Girls? and What’s Happening to Our Boys? which look at the issues our kids face and workable solutions; When We Become Strangers, intimate snapshots around the landscape of loneliness, and the many unexpected ways loneliness leaks into our lives, and how to do things better and differently; and What Happens To Our Kids When We Fail to Grow Up, how to recognise the child in us and others comes out to play, and how best to equip ourselves (and our kids) for the future.
In this podcast, Maggie talked about how she defines loneliness and how loneliness is linked to one’s happiness. Moreover, she also shared tips, especially for young adults who are most likely to feel loneliness, and how to deal with loneliness.

We understand negative emotions as having a sense of unpleasantness that negatively affects our body and mind. Those could be fear, anger, anxiety, insecurity, jealousy, and many more. However, these emotions can have a similar hold amongst our children. Many of us know that children are observant. They can learn and process all the things that occur to their surroundings, including negative emotions that they might notice from the people around them.
In this episode of Sero Boost: The Happiness Science Insights Podcast, host Lu Ngo is joined by mental health expert, Dr. Essam Daod. Dr. Daod is a trained psychiatrist and psychotherapist who provides emergency mental health interventions to displaced children and their families so they can transform their trauma into a source of growth. He has spoken at countless conferences and media outlets worldwide, advocating for the importance of mental health support for child refugees and people in crises.
The conversation is started by getting to know Dr. Essam Daod through his favorite book and then going to the core of the discussion by sharing his insights on negative emotions that affect children. He will also share tips for all the parents on how to deal with negative emotions among children.
