We understand negative emotions as having a sense of unpleasantness that negatively affects our body and mind. Those could be fear, anger, anxiety, insecurity, jealousy, and many more. However, these emotions can have a similar hold amongst our children. Many of us know that children are observant. They can learn and process all the things that occur to their surroundings, including negative emotions that they might notice from the people around them.
In this episode of Sero Boost: The Happiness Science Insights Podcast, host Lu Ngo is joined by mental health expert, Dr. Essam Daod. Dr. Daod is a trained psychiatrist and psychotherapist who provides emergency mental health interventions to displaced children and their families so they can transform their trauma into a source of growth. In 2015, he flew to Greece for what became a humanitarian rescue mission, where he co-founded Humanity Crew and has been working with refugees ever since. He has spoken at countless conferences and media outlets worldwide, advocating for the importance of mental health support for child refugees and people in crises.
The conversation is started by getting to know Dr. Essam Daod through his favorite book and then going to the core of the discussion by sharing his insights on negative emotions that affect children. He will also share tips for all the parents on how to deal with negative emotions among children.

Everyone must have felt those unpleasant and unhappy emotions, or as we label them negative emotions, at least a few times in our lives, if not many. To manage our level of happiness, it's important for us to understand how those emotions work from a scientific perspective. Once we understand how they work and how they can affect our lives, we can learn to effectively deal with them.
In this episode of Sero Boost: The Happiness Science Insights Podcast, host Lu Ngo is joined by Corey Jackson, who shares his expertise on negative emotions and how to manage them. Corey is a self-care & stress management coach, burnout prevention coach, and mental health researcher. His Ph.D. research work underlies the causes of anxiety, depression, and emotional dysfunction. His research is the culmination of a degree in Psychology and Sanskrit plus more than twenty years of studying and translating Buddhist philosophy from Tibetan to English. Comfortable in a research lab or mountain monastery, Corey’s work and research sit at the intersection of scientific and contemplative traditions. These days, he works as a meditation teacher, emotion, and stress management coach.
With his expertise, Corey sheds light on the science behind negative emotions and how they affect our level of happiness. An interesting insight that most of us might miss is the fact that negative emotions are sign posts to help us identify important things that we need to pay attention to in our lives. We actually need to have negative emotions in our lives to not only enjoy the positive ones, but also reason our way through different challenges in lives. He shares tips on how we can take a different angle on identifying and addressing these tough emotions in a way that helps us to thrive.
